The University of Tartu Announces: Doctoral Students Are Invited to the Inaugural Course on “Science-Based Entrepreneurship”.

Tartu University is launching an elective course titled “Science-Based Entrepreneurship” this spring, designed exclusively for doctoral students aiming to bridge the gap between scientific research and entrepreneurial application. The course welcomes doctoral students from all disciplines, regardless of whether they have a specific business development idea in mind.

Tõnu Esko, the Vice-Rector for Development at Tartu University, who is also the architect and lecturer of the course, emphasizes the rapid transformation of scientific discoveries into services and products as a vital way to benefit society. “Every researcher should consider the practical applications of their work. This course provides doctoral students with an opportunity to undertake this intellectual exercise,” Esko explained. He also expressed enthusiasm for the potential outcomes: “It would be fantastic if some participants started a company based on what they learn in this course. Regardless, I am confident that those who complete the course will gain a fresh perspective on their field of research and be prepared to venture into entrepreneurship in the future,” he added.

The curriculum is structured like a product development process, introducing students to potential customers, market size and potential analysis, and the development of a business plan and intellectual property strategy. In collaboration with Specialist VC, Estonia’s leading venture capital fund, doctoral students will also gain insights into the principles of engaging early-stage investors.

The course will run from March 5th to April 11th, offering 2 ECTS credits. Weekly seminars will feature founders of successful deep technology companies sharing their biggest lessons and challenges. Additionally, the course will analyze the business models of several international deep technology companies to learn from their success stories.

  • All doctoral students at Tartu University are welcome to join.
  • Registration is available via the ÕIS (LTGI.00.005).
